Application Instructions

These instructions are for PhD/MS applicants. These applicants should also review the Stanford Graduate Admissions website for university-wide admissions policies, which we link to in our own instructions where appropriate. In cases where the instructions on our department website differ from the Stanford Graduate Admissions website (e.g., the number of official transcripts required), you should follow the instructions on our department website.

Step 3: Submit Your Application

Online Application System

Applicants may apply to only one (1) graduate program at Stanford per academic year. Note: You may apply concurrently to one departmental program and to a professional school program (law, medicine, or business).

Tips for Filling Out the Application

  • Educational History (page 7)The institution where you earned or expect to earn your bachelor's degree should be listed as Post-Secondary Institution. If you transferred from another school or enrolled in a graduate program, please list these institutions after your bachelor's degree institution. For each institution listed, please upload a high-resolution scan or electronic version of the official transcript (in English).

  • Test Information (page 9): If you are required, and have not yet taken the TOEFL or if you wish to use scores from a future test, please wait until the complete scores are available before submitting your application by the deadline. If you have older or unofficial scores for the TOEFL, please include those in your application.

  • Recommender Info (page 14): Click "Submit Recommendation Request" as soon as each recommender is confirmed. Please do not wait for all of your letters of recommendation to be submitted before submitting your application; the online recommendation system will remain open for your recommenders until they submit their letter.

  • Document Uploads (page 15): We encourage applicants to upload their resume/CV under Additional Information. If you wish to include additional documents, please provide a link in your resume/CV instead of uploading the full documents.

Please check your entire application for accuracy before submission, as changes are not permitted after submission. Submitting your application early does not affect your chances of admission; all applications are reviewed after the deadline.
