Shanhui Fan is one of four Stanford faculty members who are among the 252 new members elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2026.

Shanhui is the Joseph and Hon Mai Goodman Professor in the School of Engineering, professor of electrical engineering. He is a Professor of Electrical Engineering, a Professor of Applied Physics (by courtesy), and a Senior Fellow in the Precourt Institute for Energy. He is also a faculty member of the Edward L. Ginzton Laboratory, for which he was the Director from 2014 to 2021.

His research interests are in fundamental studies of nanophotonic structures, especially photonic crystals and meta-materials, and applications of these structures in energy and information technology applications. He has published over 700 refereed journal articles, given more than 400 plenary/keynote/invited talks, and holds over 80 granted U. S. patents.

Being elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is a prestigious honor recognizing exceptional career achievements, leadership, and contributions in academia, arts, industry, policy, and science. Founded in 1780, it serves as both an honorary society and a policy research center, bringing together leaders to address national challenges.
