Joe Little, EE IT Manager
What I Do
I support the research and IT needs of the department.
Origins
Born outside of Pittsburgh, PA, I've lived there, parts of Florida, college in Massachusetts, work in D.C., and now the Bay Area, calling San Carlos home for over twenty years. I originally was in the Medical School and Hospitals, when Charlie Orgish plucked me from my misery there and had me join this great department. While attending high school in Florida, my first great opportunity came up. I didn't graduate high school, but went off to college in Massachusetts a little early. While there I took a year long internship at Stanford while finishing up my studies. First job was for NOAA/NASA prior to returning to Stanford in '95.
My EExperience
At just shy of three decades, EE has been my primary Stanford home and family. Those I originally worked with instilled a great sense of pride and responsibility for caring for the department, its people, and the great things that have come out of here. I hope I have fostered that and passed that on, working with great colleagues these past many years. Being at the center of all these great works, among industry changing people, and at the start of so many great companies has been a unique experience that only Stanford, and especially EE can offer.
Outside of Work
I've generally enjoyed hiking around historical sites, whether famous Japanese Shinto shrines or Civil War battlegrounds. I also enjoy reading/writing when I can get to it. I've had great passions around the Open Source software movement earlier in my career, but that has been redirected to mentoring the next generation to not lose sight of where all of today's technology came from, and who by and why it was created.
