ABSTRACT: Planetary scale problems require planetary scale solutions. We need an accelerated approach of bringing scientific solutions to the masses – to engage and support broad communities to engage in rapid “build, test, deploy” strategy if we are to resolve large scale planetary challenges we face in health, climate and education. Sharing case studies from diagnostics and microscopy, I will describe my lab’s approach of “frugal science” to rapidly scale and deploy optical solutions globally. I will spend some time reflecting the next set of challenges ahead and sensors on the horizon.
