I will discuss recent work with Bousso showing that entanglement islands (the region of spacetime “holographically dual” to Hawking radiation) can extend parametrically far (in Planck units) outside of a black hole horizon. In principle, this means that a distant observer can determine experimentally whether the black hole information paradox is resolved by complementarity, or by a firewall. No prior knowledge of islands or their role in the black hole information problem will be assumed; the first half of the talk will be a (hopefully!) accessible review of those ideas.
