Dubai Ruler His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced that Abbas El Gamal, a pioneer in digital communications, has been awarded the 2025 Great Arab Minds Award in Engineering & Technology.  This award, often called the “Arab Nobel,” recognizes his foundational work in network information theory and digital imaging. The recognition highlights his career-long contributions to the foundations of modern digital communications.

Abbas is the Hitachi America Professor in the School of Engineering,  Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Senior Fellow at the Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford University. His research contributions have been in network information theory, FPGAs, and digital imaging devices and systems. He has authored or coauthored over 230 papers and holds 35 patents in these areas. He is coauthor of the book Network Information Theory (Cambridge Press 2011).
