On November 2nd, 2023, Scientists Speak Up will be hosting a panel discussion on "Science Education in the Age of Misinformation", based on the 2022 report with the same name (https://sciedandmisinfo.stanford.edu). This collaborative report, which delves into the nature of scientific misinformation and suggests strategies to enhance science education standards to effectively address misinformation, provides readers with invaluable insights into how we can better equip ourselves and future generations to navigate the complex landscape of misinformation and promote scientific literacy. We anticipate that the discussion will be both thought-provoking and impactful, and we aim to empower individuals to engage in informed and effective conversations about science.

Panelists:

  • Dr. Jonathan Osborne, Professor Emeritus, Graduate School of Education, Stanford, with a research focus on policy and pedagogy in the teaching and learning of science.
  • Dr. Daniel Pimentel, Assistant Professor, Center to Support Excellence in Teaching, University of Alabama, with a research focus on the areas of science media literacy, epistemic cognition, nature of science, and bridging the fields of science education and science communication.
  • Dr. Bruce Alberts, Professor Emeritus, Biochemistry and Biophysics at UCSF, prominent and well renown biochemist and scientist with a strong commitment to the improvement of science education and inclusivity.
  • Dr. Janet Coffey, Program Director of Science at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, with a professional career in science education and longstanding interest in science learning and public engagement in science.

Coffee and Pastries will be served. Please RSVP so we can get a head count. We hope you can join us.

About Scientists Speak Up: SSU is a student organization at Stanford University 🌲 working to enable students to identify and combat scientific misinformation. We teach students methods of framing conversations around politicized science topics that respect the other person’s existing values and strengthen connections with them. We support each other to have those conversations by offering communication workshops, community discussions, and speaker series where we network with scientists to make a collective impact
