The authors report results of CW degenerate four-wave mixing experiments on room-temperature GaAs-GaAlAs multiple-quantum-well material using a commercial semiconductor diode laser as the sole light source. With CW powers of approximately 3 mW and intensities of approximately 13 W/cm/sup 2/, the authors observe diffraction efficiencies of approximately 10/sup -4/, corresponding to an effective nonlinear coefficient of chi /sup 3/ approximately 6*10/sup -2/ esu
