We are witnessing an incredible era of exponential growth in applications that require advances in materials technology: from 3D printing, to AR/VR to autonomous cars to 5G to machine learning and artificial intelligence, for example. Revolutionary new products are steadily coming into the marketplace and many more are needed and expected. OPTICS & PHOTONICS materials play a key role in many of these new products: new displays, new personal mobile devices, new sensors in cars, and new information technology products for both storage and data processing. It is becoming very clear that the areas of OPTICS & PHOTONICS are essential technologies for our nation and the rest of the world. Inventing and uncovering new materials in the OPTICS & PHOTONICS domain will be exceedingly critical to see more and more novel products to help improve people's lives.
This workshop will focus on the need for breakthrough optics and photonics materials: materials that sense, materials that store, transparent materials that fold easily, materials that process information. These materials need to be producible at large scale, energy efficient, and manufacturable at low cost. It is increasingly clear that the use of modern computational techniques (like big data, machine learning, AI) can be used to improve the rate of discovery of these new materials.
