A great deal of research on organizational inequality investigates how race, gender, and other social categorical dimensions influence where people are employed, the jobs they do, the money they earn, and other career related factors. What has largely been missing from the literature is attention to networks as 'hidden culprits' of career opportunities, and the way organizations systematically use, manage, and exploit networks that can unintentionally disadvantage employees. This presentation will discuss research on the way networks perform as hidden un-equalizers, the effects this has on various demographic groups, and offer research-based evidence for ways organizations can reduce inequality.
