The widespread adoption of smartphones and wearables offers an unprecedented opportunity for low cost health studies of far-ranging reach. Within 6 months of the launch of Apple’s ResearchKit, more than 100,000 people from all over the United States were recruited into five launch mobile application-based research studies. Similar libraries have since sprung up on Android. This talk will provide an introduction to mobile health studies on smartphones including study design, regulatory approvals, production, recruitment, maintenance and scientific discovery. I will highlight ways in which smartphones have been coopted as data collection tools able to amass a wealth of survey, device, sensor and clinical data and the challenges that stand before completing a successful study.
Steven Hershman is Director of mHealth in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford Medicine where he is leading the day-to-day operations of the MyHeart Counts study and launching a portfolio of new mHealth projects related to pediatric diseases, telerehabilitation, and eConsent-based biobank recruiting.
He holds BA, MS and MSE degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD in Systems Biology and the Leder Human Biology & Translational Medicine Program from Harvard University.
Steve has over a decade of experience tackling technical challenges related to medicine. He previously was Director of Biomedical Informatics and Principal Scientist at LifeMap Solutions where in he helped launch and run the Asthma Health ResearchKit study and lead the development team that brought MyHeart Counts to be a genetic-enabled interventional clinical trial. At LifeMap, he contributed to the development of the hospital access app Mount Sinai NY, a COPD management platform and a DTC carrier testing product. He previously co-founder of Genterpret, a Blueprint Health accelerator company.
