Ion trap quantum computers at first glance have no materials challenges. Ions are all the same by nature and they are trapped and manipulated by electromagnetic fields. The materials challenges arise in how these fields are delivered to the ions. In this talk, I will describe how ion trap quantum computers work and then review the materials challenges that were recently described in Nature Reviews Materials (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41578-021-00292-1).
Bio: Prof. Kenneth Brown is a faculty member in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics, and Chemistry at Duke University. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and an Experienced Research Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He is an expert in quantum information and a founding member of the Duke Quantum Center. He also serves as a scientific advisor for IonQ, inc. His research interests include ion trap quantum computing, quantum error correction, and quantum technologies for sensing.
