Presenters from NERC and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) will discuss the integration efforts, data collection, and analysis of distributed energy resources to enhance system reliability and expand existing market design to a broader set of resources. An overview of CAISO's innovative facility design and Smart Grid project demonstration will also be presented.
Our speakers will discuss exciting new ideas and technologies that are changing the electricity industry. The theme of the seminar series is on smart grids and energy systems, with speakers from academic institutions and industry. The hour-long seminars, including ample time for discussion, are held at 1:00 pm or 1:15 pm approximately every Thursday.
This seminar is offered as a 1 unit seminar course, CEE 272T/EE292T for interested students. This course can be repeated for credit for the students.
Donna Pratt is a Senior Performance Analysis Advisor in Reliability Risk Management at NERC responsible for two of NERC's compliance reporting applications, GADS and DADS (for demand response). Donna has 25 years of experience in the electric industry, first as a consultant to utilities in the US, Canada, and Mexico to design and implement dynamic pricing systems, followed by fifteen years working in organized wholesale electricity markets, primarily on the design, implementation, and evaluation of demand response programs, and integration of distributed energy resources into capacity markets.
John Goodin is the CAISO's regulatory policy manager in the market and infrastructure policy group. John has been with the CAISO for over 18 years, and he was part of the CAISO start-up team back in 1997. John led the development of the CAISO's current demand response policies and products, and he continues to support distributed energy resource policy development, resource adequacy, and other policy efforts that impact CAISO market design and infrastructure policy concerns. John earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.
