Life-Cycle and Environmental Considerations for Battery Storage Systems

Abstract / Description: 

Batteries are essential for decarbonizing the transportation sector and managing the variability of the renewable power generation. However, while batteries can provide many benefits, they also come with environmental concerns that stem from mining the materials needed to make them, the energy required for manufacturing, and end-of-life disposition. Data and models that explore the life-cycle and environmental considerations for batteries will be presented. In addition, by comparing batteries to other options for providing transportation and grid-balancing services, we will demonstrate that batteries are overall very beneficial for creating a low carbon energy system.
