Abstract / Description:

GoogleX's Project Loon is a network of high-altitude balloons designed to provide internet connectivity to rural and remote areas, or where other infrastructure is impractical. Loon acts as a standard LTE network for users, allowing direct connection on the ground using ordinary mobile handsets, with an advanced network backbone to trunk data back the terrestrial wired internet. We will discuss the challenges of designing, launching, operating, and maintaining the Loon fleet, from engineering of balloons and electronics, to communication systems, to modelling worldwide weather and wind patterns.
