Multimode Fibers: Endoscopic Imaging

We are using adaptive optics to control the field distribution at the input of a multimode fiber, allowing a desired field distribution to be created in the three-dimensional space near the fiber output. We are exploring several applications, including: scanning microscopy (e.g., for minimally invasive endoscopy), targeted light delivery (e.g., for optogenetics), and sensor multiplexing. We have demonstrated a microscopy technique in which the number of resolvable image features approaches four times the number of spatial modes propagating in the fiber and have analytically derived resolution limits for multi-mode fiber imaging, showing how these are related to corresponding limits for conventional imaging systems.
