Amy's brief journal notes from fall 1881 are used to introduce many of the people mentioned in the letters (and a few not heard of again). The Journal begins in Rhode Island, but describes some of the preparations made for her move to Washington, D.C. Although many entries seem trivial, the entire journal is included because of the overall flavor it provides of how Amy spent her time.
