Optical bistability represents a new kind of nonlinear system in optics.
It offers a means of realizing all-optical switching, amplifying and signal processing
devices. Research towards practical devices is still at an early stage. However, prospects
exist for simple devices combining good performance capabilities and the unique attributes
of all-optical systems. These prospects are discussed
