*** WELCOME ***
TO ALL EE TEACHING ASSISTANTS
Welcome to TAing at Stanford. Please be sure to read the contents of this handbook very carefully. It will be helpful if you follow the instructions as indicated. If you have any questions at this time or in the future, please feel free to stop by my office and I will be happy to help. Note that I am available M-F (mornings) and by appointment.
These are some administrative tasks that need to be completed as well as administrative information that you should be aware of. You will find a similar sheet on the page titled "Getting Started as an EE TA" (page 6) with a list of more items that should be taken care of in your first couple of weeks as a TA.
- _____If you do not already have a Leland e-mail account please open one as soon as possible and send me a message with your account name. Since most correspondence will be via e-mail, it is critical that you get into the habit of checking e-mail frequently. E-mail accounts are opened on the web by going to http://sunetid.stanford.edu. Any questions should be directed to Sweet Hall (725-2101).
- _____Please be sure to let me know your correct local address and phone number as soon as you have it. It is essential that we have an up-to-date address and phone number for you at all times.
- _____In our student lounge (Packard 039) there are mail slots organized alphabetically. Since there are too many students to have individual mailboxes, any mail or messages will be placed in the mail slot bearing the initial of your last name. Please get into the habit of passing through the lounge to look for messages. There are times when this is the manner in which I will contact you and there may be matters having critical time constraints.
- _____Please read the rest of this handbook. Pay special attention to "The Care and Feeding of Teaching Assistants." It will help you to understand what will be expected of you and what you can expect from us.
- _____To receive your paychecks on time, you need to finish your new-hire paperwork by the end of the first week of the quarter. You are still required to pay (or make arrangements with the Bursar to pay through payroll deduction) all of your non-tuition fees on or before the University deadline. Failure to take care of the non-tuition fees will result in late fees.
- _____If you would like to have your paychecks directly deposited into your bank account, fill out a Direct Deposit Form and return to Penny Fong in Packard 167.
- _____If you did not attend the September EE TA workshop, please contact Vickie Carrillo at the Packard Reception to arrange to view the tape of the workshop. This is part of the EE TA Training Program and it is important that you do so as soon as possible. Don’t forget to sign the list accompanying the video indicating that you have viewed the tape.
- _____Adequate safety training is required of all department staff, incoming students, and Research and Teaching Assistants. If you have not previously completed the health and safety seminar at Stanford University, you will need to do so promptly. The Seminar is scheduled in TCSEQ – Rm. 200, on Tuesday, September 26 from 10:00AM-12:00PM. Since the EE TA Workshop is at the same time, please arrange to watch the tape at the Engineering Library. You will be given a form when you check out the video. Be sure to complete the form and return it to Sue Gress in Packard 170.
- _____Students in the EE Department are REQUIRED to enter their e-mail address, as well as a day time office and phone number (if applicable), in the Address portion of the student Axess system. The e-mail address is added to the EE distribution list and it is the OFFICIAL means of notifying students. This address will be used to inform students about a wide scope of information ranging from registration requirements and holds to departmental parties. The office and phone information are used to create a directory for Faculty and Staff (as well as students). For all but first-quarter students, failure to enter this information into the Axess system will prevent a student from submitting their study list online. This will likely result in late fees. To prevent this, students are strongly encouraged to open an e-mail account and enter the data as soon as possible.
I hope TAing for EE will be a wonderful experience for you.
