Research Opportunities

Many Electrical Engineering graduate students carry on advanced research as part of their educational program at both the M.S. and Ph.D. levels. Effective research requires competent faculty advisers and high quality research facilities, both of which are found in the various laboratories of the Electrical Engineering Department, and the Center for Integrated Systems,

The Department of Electrical Engineering is organized into five laboratories: the Computer Systems Laboratory, the Solid State and Photonics Laboratory, the Information Systems Laboratory, the Integrated Circuits Laboratory, and the Space, Telecommunications and Radioscience Laboratory. In addition to the laboratories there are interdisciplinary centers that bring together faculty from different laboratories and departments. The Center for Integrated Systems brings together researchers in solid-state physics, materials science, and computer science, who cooperate to develop VLSI technology.

The Department seeks to provide an optimum environment for research and scholarly efforts of faculty and students. Approximately $40 million is spent each year on research in the Department's laboratory programs. Most of this research is sponsored by outside agencies and private corporations, leading to frequent interactions between industry, government and the University.
