EE290A,B,C: Curricular Practical TrainingFrom Stanford Electrical Engineering Department Graduate Handbook(Difference between revisions)
Revision as of 21:12, 21 August 2008EE290A,B,C offer course credit for EE majors who desire relevant work experience as part of their program of study. This is done in a manner consistent with the INS regulations and the Bechtel International Center. These policies are subject to change and the students should make sure that they have the most current information from the I Center. See, in particular, their circular Curricular Practical Training which can be found at www.stanford.edu/dept/icenter/practical/prac.html. In order to be consistent with INS regulations, such work must be relevant to the curricular program pursued by the student. Sign up for the EE 290A,B or C course on your study list for one unit only for the quarter during which you work. EE290A,B,C may each be taken only once, and EE290B is restricted to EE Engineer and PhD candidates and EE290C is restricted to EE PhD candidates. The "only once" restriction includes a quarter in which an NC is received, e.g., if 290A is taken during a quarter and a grade of NC is received, the student still may not take it again. During summer quarter students must register for a minimum of three units, consisting of one unit of Curricular Practical Training and the remainder of ordinary course units such as seminars or special studies. The course is completed and a grade of "S" assigned following submission and approval of a final report which describes in general terms (in competent English) the work you performed and how it relates to your academic program. Typical reports are 5-10 pages. Papers resulting from the work can be added as an appendix, but do not alone fulfill the requirement -- the report must describe how the specific project related to your Stanford program by citing specific classes and how your project improved your skills relating to those classes. The report cover page should include the student's name, Stanford ID, the course (EE290A, B, or C), and the quarter during which the course was taken. EE290A reports should be submitted to Vice Chair for final approval. Reports may be by email to vicechair@eemail.stanford.edu as a pdf file or as plain ASCII. Nonstandard proprietary formats such as doc files are not acceptable. Be sure to list your full name, your Student ID number, email address, and the quarter in which the course was taken on your report. Failure to describe the relevance of the work to the individual's academic program or poorly written English will result in the report not being approved. Reports are due the last day of classes during the quarter that 290 is taken. An incomplete ("I") grade must be changed to a permanent grade within one year. If an incomplete grade is not cleared within one academic year, it is changed automatically by the Office of the University Registrar to an "NC." For EE290B and C the report must be read and approved by the dissertation adviser (Engineer or PhD) prior to submission to the Department. If you are on a student visa, you will need to submit a standard request letter signed by your academic advisor to the Bechtel Center. This letter must exactly follow the template provided at www.stanford.edu/dept/icenter/practical/advisor.html[1] and it must be produced on departmental letterhead. You must customize the information for yourself, enter the name of the person responsible for 290A,B,C (the Vice Chair of the Department) in the appropriate place, and remove any extra material (underlines where the information is supposed to go). Be sure to leave your advisor sufficient time to produce the letter by requesting the letter safely in advance of the expected start date. Be warned that the letter must contain exactly the same information (e.g., the specific bullet items) or it will be returned to you for correction. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
