Prospective EE Graduate Students

The Electrical Engineering Department accepts applications for full-time study toward the degrees of M.S., Engineer and Ph.D. for the autumn quarter only. Honors Cooperative Program (HCP) applications are accepted quarterly for the M.S. and Engineer program only. Applicants must hold a U.S. Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in order to be eligible for admission.

Application Deadline  for Full-Time Study

December 16, 2008 is the application deadline for full time study for autumn 2009 - 2010 start. All application materials must be received by this date in order to be consideration for admission and financial support. The department strongly recommends GRE tests be taken early in the Fall to ensure that the University receives them by the deadline. This also applies to TOEFL scores, if required.

Procedures

Apply online at gradadmissions.stanford.edu. Make sure your first and last names remain consistent throughout the application process.

The fee is US $105. Establish a user account (as instructed on-line) and enter a credit card payment (Visa or Mastercard) or pay by check electronically via a U.S. bank account.

When your electronic application has been received, Stanford University will notify you via your user account. You will not receive a confirmation from the Electrical Engineering Department.

If you are unable to apply online:

Request a paper application in writing (no personal visits, phone calls or emails), and include a statement explaining why you are unable to use the online application. In addition to the US $105 fee, there is a US $20 non-refundable paper application fee which is to be paid in advance by check or money order (payable to Stanford University). Do not send cash.

It may take up to one week from the date we receive your request for the application materials to be delivered; three or more weeks for international delivery. Application material cannot be sent via overnight or express mail.

Financial Assistance

The department annually awards a limited number of fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships to incoming graduate students. To be considered for department assistance as an entering student, applicants indicate their funding preference on their application. With the exception of applying for student loans, it is not necessary to submit a financial aid application. Notification regarding most types of assistance is sent to recipients in March. Because not all entering EE students secure funding as they begin their graduate studies at Stanford, prospective students are encouraged to apply for outside sources of funding.

Existing Stanford Students

(coterminal, non EE students wishing to add/change, EE Master's-only students wanting to take the qualifying examination)

Stanford charges US $50 per Coterminal Application and Graduate Authorization Petition. Students are encouraged to come to the EE Admissions Office (Packard 170) to discuss their situation in detail.

Coterminal students

To apply for the MSEE, the applicant must :

1. have completed 120 units toward the Bachelor's degree and
2. not scheduled to have the Bachelor's degree conferred the quarter immediately following the application.

Once these are met, the applicant must submit the following :

1. coterminal application and program proposal
2. statement of purpose
3. GRE scores
4. supplemental information form
5. 2 letters of recommendation from EE faculty members (3 if the applicant wishes to be considered for funding)

All of the above materials are available on the web or at the EE Graduate Admissions Office. There is no deadline. Complete applications must be submitted to the EE Graduate Admissions Office.

Dual Degree/Changing Degree Students

For those students not presently matriculated in an EE graduate degree program, one requirement must be met: two quarters (excluding seminars) as a full time student at Stanford.

Once this is met, the following must be submitted :

1. Graduate Program Authorization Petition
2. Statement of Purpose
3. Supplemental Information
4. 3 letters of recommendation (2 from EE faculty members)

The above forms are available on the web or at the EE or University Graduate Admissions Office. There is no deadline. Complete applications must be submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office.
