This is the IEEE's most prestigious award in the field of solid-state circuit design, and it was awarded to Teresa for her "pioneering contributions to the development of integrated wireless communication systems."

July 2008 Nick McKeown

2009 recipient of the IEEE Koji Kobayashi Computers and Communications Award

This technical field award was established to recognize outstanding contributions to the integration of computers and communications. It is being presented to Nick in recognition for his "pioneering contributions to the theory and practice of input-queued switches, their scheduling algorithms and router buffers."

Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers

The Nation's highest honor for professionals at the outset of their independent scientific research careers.  These awards were established in 1996 to honor the most promising researchers in the country within their fields.  Selection for the award is based on the combination of innovative research at the frontiers of science and technology and community service demonstrated through scientific leadership and community outreach.

Elected a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union

This recognition is conferred on scientists who "have attained acknowledged eminence in one or more branches of goephysics." It has been awarded to Umran for his "fundamental contributions to understanding whistler-mode waves in radiation belts and electrodynamic coupling between thunderstorms and the mesosphere and ionosphere."

Jan 2007 Kunle Olukotun

Select as a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery

This designation is conferred upon those ACM members who have distinguished themselves by outstanding technical and professional achievements in the field of information technology.  Only 41 Fellows were named this year out of a membership of over 62,000. Kunle is being honored for his "contributions to multiprocessors on a chip and multi threaded processor design."

This designation is conferred upon those ACM members who have distinguished themselves by outstanding technical and professional achievements in the field of information technology.  Only 41 Fellows were named this year out of a membership of over 62,000. Nick is being honored for his "contributions to network switching and queueing."

National Academcy of Sciences Award for Initiatives in Research

This is a major award that is presented annually to recognize innovative young scientists and to encourage research likely to lead toward new capabilities for human benefit.  It is being awarded to Shanhui "for innovative research on the theory and applications of photonic crytal devices."

Feb 2007 Joe Goodman

2007 recipient of the Gold Medal of the International Society for Optical Engineering, SPIE

This is the highest honor awarded by the Society and is presented annually in recognition of outstanding engineering or scientific accomplishments in optics, electro-optics, or photographic technologies or applications.  It is being awarded to Joe in recognition of his "seminal contributions to the field of Fourier Optics, Optical Signal Processing, Optical Interconnects and Speckle," as well as his "effective and stimulating teachings through three classical textbooks and his leadership in promoting optics research, transfer from academia to industry, and entrepreneurship."

Feb 2007 Bob Gray, Mark Horowitz, Teresa Meng, and Sebastian Thrun

Elected to the National Academy of Engineering

This is one of the engineering profession's highest honors.  Sebastian was cited for his "contributions to probabilistic robotics, including mobile robot localization and mapping," Teresa was recognized for "pioneering the development of distributed wireless network technology," Mark was cited for his "leadership in high- bandwidth memory-interface technology and in scalable cache-coherent multiprocessor architectures," and Bob was recognized for his "contributions to information theory and data compression."

2007 recipient of the Adolph Lomb Medal

The Lomb Medal is awarded annually by the Optical Society of America to a person who has made an especially noteworthy contribution to optics at an early age.

May 2007 Bill Dally and Pat Hanrahan

Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Individuals are elected Fellows of the Academy in recognition of the preeminent contributions they have made to their disciplines and to society at large.

The highest honor bestowed by the IEEE Information Theory Society, the award is being presented to Bob "for consistent and profound contributions to the field of information theory"

July 2007 Arogyaswami Paulraj

Elected an Associate Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences

The Academy's Fellows and Associate Fellows are elected from among the world's most distinguished scientists. Paul is being recognized for "his pioneering work in the theory and practice of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communications, a field with worldwide applications, and fundamental contributions to high resolution signal analysis."

Techno Visionary Award from the India Semiconductor Association

This annual award, which  was instituted in 2007 to recognize "lifetime achievement in the field of electronics," was presented to Krishna in recogition of his "outstanding contribution to the field of semiconductors."

2007 recipient of the Harvey Prize in Science and Technology

The Harvey prizes are awarded annually by the Technion to recognize and reward individuals who have "truly contributed to the progress of humanity" through breakthroughs in science, technology and human health.

He is being recognized for his "many deep and creative contributions to physics, analysis, and novel devices in semiconductor, dielectric, and metallic optical nanostructures."

He is being recognized for his exceptional contributions to "optical micro-electro-mechanical systems and nanophotonics, with applications in displays, telecommunications, and sensing."

This is for "outstanding achievements for the development of holographic memories."

This is one of the IEEE's most prestigious honors and has been awarded to Bob for his "contributions to vector quantization and signal compression techniques."

Nov 2007 Kunle Olukotun

Elected a Fellow of the IEEE

Award to Kunle for his "contributions to multiprocessors on a chip and multi-threaded processor design."  Election to the grade of Fellow is conferred upon those members of the IEEE who have distinguished themselves through an extraordinary record of accomplishment in the Institute's fields of interest.

Elected to the National Academy of Engineering

Awarded for his pioneering "contributions to the theory and practice of MIMO smart-antenna wireless technology." Election to the Academy is one of the highest professional distinctions awarded to an engineer. It is an wonderful personal honor for Paulraj, and a well deserved recognition of his outstanding research accomplishments.

This IEEE Field Award was established to recognize outstanding contributions to solid-state devices and technology, and it is being presented to Jim "for seminal contributions to the modeling, simulation and physics of silicon devices."

Sept 2006 John Cioffi

Marconi Prize

This award is presented annually to an "outstanding individual whose scope of work and influence emulate the principle of 'creativity in service to humanity' that inspired Marconi."  This Prize is being awarded to John for his pioneering research leading to the DSL technology that has brought broadband internet access to millions.

Oct 2006 Bob Dutton

Kaufman Award from the Electronic Design Automation Consortium

This award is presented annually to "an individual who has had a demonstrable impact on electronic design through contributions to electronic design automation."  Bob is being honored as the "father of TCAD" for his pioneering work on the modeling and simulation of integrated circuit fabrication processes and devices.

2006 IEEE Visualization Career Award

This award, which is presented annually, recognizes Pat's lifetime of contributions to visualization research, spanning such diverse areas as volume rendering, scientific visualization, and information visualization.  Pat is universally regarded as an inspiration to the visualization community.

Nov 2006 Tom Kailath

2007 IEEE Medal of Honor

This is the Institute's highest award, and is being presented to Tom for "for exceptional development of powerful algorithms in the fields of communications, computing, control, and signal processing." The Medal of Honor was first presented to Edwin H. Armstrong in 1917.

This is for his "contributions to upper atmospheric physics."
